Church Leadership Basics: God’s Purpose for the Church
Living Life with Purpose Begins with Our Number One Priority
(Click on the cover to learn more.)

One of the activities in the Living Life with Purpose Curriculum is to distribute a blank daily scheduling sheet and have students block out what they would be doing over the next twenty-four hours. They are then to think about what they would do differently if they knew it would be their last twenty-four hours on earth.  In teaching that session, I’ve primarily heard responses such as spending time making sure family and friends knew how much they loved them. Some responded that they would make sure their relationship with God was as it should be. Others stated that their number one priority would be telling everybody they could about Jesus.

How interesting that according to Jesus, our relationships with God and others is how we should always be prioritizing our time.

Number One Priority for Prioritized Schedules: To Love God with the whole of your being

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. (Matt. 22:37-38)

Notice the command: Love God.

Notice the order: Love the Lord your God first then people.

Notice the amount: Love God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.

In addition to the content on this page the Steering the Church Toward God’s Purposes Leadership Guide includes some brief input about each of the above points as well as some questions to reflect on how your time use demonstrates love for God.

  1. What is it to be loving God, if it is not the activities such evangelizing, making disciples, how do we have this relationship. Is it by reading His word, prayer. How do you make GOD the center and not activities?

    • To be sure, Babalola, love for God will be demonstrated by what we do. We read verses like “If you love me, keep my commands.” (Jn. 14:15) and “this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome” (1 Jn. 5:3) But, God makes it clear that love is what should motivate our “activities” and when it does, what we do will purposeful activity with God at the center rather than running the treadmill of life with little eternal value.
