Change can be difficult for many people. Not everyone will like or agree with changes we want to make. As leaders, it’s our responsibility to guide people into navigating change in ways that line up with God’s purposes, design, and mission for the Church in Christ-like ways through His power. When we do, we won’t be forcing people to line up with us (1 Pet. 5:3) but rather pointing them to the One to whom they truly are accountable.<\/p>\n

Guiding People to Navigate Change Well Requires Leaders to Have the Right Perspective<\/h2>\n

We need to guide people through change as a fellow-journeyer — “fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household” (Eph. 2:19). When people get the sense that we’re all in this together, aiming for what God wants us to do, they’ll tend to be more cooperative and yield to our guidance. If they sense that we think we’re superior and merely pushing our own agenda on them, they will likely be more reticent to accept our guidance.<\/p>\n

Navigating Change Well Requires a Source Outside of Ourselves<\/h2>\n

Christ is the Head of the Body who always knows what’s best (Col. 1:18). We must look to Him when changes need to be made. It’s about getting people on page with Him, not pulling them toward our ideas. That will be more likely to happen if they’ve been invited to join us in prayer before decisions are made. The best place we can guide people to is the throne of grace where we will find the help we need (Heb. 4:16). God promises to give wisdom to those who ask (James 1:5).<\/p>\n

Guiding people to get on page with the Lord isn’t enough. We also need to steer people toward God’s power to effectively navigate the changes that must be made. Making changes as His Church must never come across as a self-improvement plan. If people plug into the right Power Source (2 Pet. 1:3), it’s no longer dependent on them to muster up the strength to comply. Even if they don’t like the change, they’ll react and respond with Christ-like grace and integrity when empowered by His Spirit.<\/p>\n
