Face it: Exercising church discipline tends to be one of the most challenging and unpopular responsibilities of leaders in the Body of Christ. When all other measures have failed, however, it may be necessary for the growth and restoration of the individual as well as the church body. We need the right heart qualities<\/a> when exercising church discipline to make the right kind of impact.<\/p>\n

Qualities in a Leader That Make a Difference in Church Discipline<\/h2>\n

The following qualities open the door for positive responses in church discipline:<\/p>\n

Humility<\/p>\n

Leaders who acknowledge their own capacity to err tend to approach discipline with both grace and truth. Before trying to take the “speck of sawdust” out of someone else’s eye, they deal with the “plank” that may be in their own eye (Matt. 7:1-5). Humble leaders recognize that we all stand before God equally in need of His grace. This perspective keeps us from approaching church discipline from a self-righteous or superior stance.<\/p>\n

Integrity<\/p>\n

How can we expect people to trust the process if leaders lack integrity? We need pure motives which become evident through the way we approach not only this responsibility but everything we do. This involves a lack of manipulation and bending of procedures to favor some above others. We maintain transparency in our communication. When we take “pains to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord but also in the eyes of man” (2 Cor. 8:21), people tend to have a greater acceptance of these difficult decisions.<\/p>\n

Love<\/p>\n

Since “love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth” (1 Cor. 13:6), leaders proceed when discipline is necessary. They, however, do it in a way that “always protects, always trusts, always hopes” (1 Cor. 13:7). Patience and kindness mark the process, not frustration, harshness, and condemnation. With love guiding church discipline, leaders truly work toward the health and growth of the individual and the whole Body.<\/p>\n

Perseverance<\/p>\n

Church discipline tends to be a slow process marked by bumps along the road. As leaders, we need to patiently persevere and not give up on people. The Lord Himself is patient with us, “not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance” (2 Pet. 3:9). We must remain willing to invest the time it takes to help people see their need to turn to the Lord and follow His ways.<\/p>\n

Self-Control<\/p>\n

\"To<\/a>How easily frustration can set in when criticism and resistance come or people fail to change. Frustration can turn to anger and anger can undo all the good leading up to that point. We need self-control to heed God’s instructions that “if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently” (Gal. 6:1). Notice that it takes living by the Spirit to be the kind of person suited to guide the restoration process.<\/p>\n
