As suggested in the previous post, some expectations on church staff<\/a> can be quite beneficial, particularly those that line up with the basics of life in Him. How leaders communicate those expectations should also line up with those basics. After all, one of God’s expectations on leaders is that they be examples<\/a> (1 Pet. 5:2-3; 1 Cor. 11:1).<\/p>\n

Lining Up How We Communicate Expectations with the Basics of Life in Him<\/h2>\n

1) We can, and should, communicate expectations upfront in the hiring or recruiting process.<\/p>\n

Job, or ministry, descriptions often describe what’s expected should someone commit to a certain ministry. Read through the posts in the job descriptions category<\/a> of this Practicum for how to develop them as tools that line up with the basics of life in Him.<\/p>\n

2) If we’re serious about expecting people to align with the basics of life in Him, we’ll need to put systems in place that work toward that end.<\/p>\n

We can use staff evaluations<\/a> for accountability purposes. We can request reporting<\/a> or feedback on a regular basis. Of course, how we implement these practices must line up with the basics or they could be counteractive to these expectations. (Click on the links to go to those categories.)<\/p>\n

3) We must be supportive and encouraging with staff in the way we communicate expectations<\/p>\n

Yes, we may need to admonish people at times and we may need to provide instruction on how to line up but we must always speak the truth in love (Eph. 4:15). And, we must listen to their concerns or needs so we properly address the situation. Whether communicating in staff meetings<\/a> or one-on-one, leaders must provide an environment conducive to and exemplary of serving in accordance of the basics of life in Christ.<\/p>\n
