A Lack of Humility in Leaders Hurts the Body

pride or arrogance.

This goes against our purpose to love. According to 1 Corinthians 13:4, love "does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud." That means we won't compare or compete with others. If we're proud, we must appear better than others.

sense of superiority.

This goes against the way God designed the Church, the Body of Christ, to function. According to 1 Corinthians 12:22-25, everybody is important and needed. That requires the teachable spirit of a humble person. If we're superior, we won't tend to learn from others.

Leaders Who are Humble Help the Body

Humility on the other hand demonstrates ...

submission to God's authority.

We acknowledge that it's His mission we pursue. Thus, we follow God's agenda, not our own.

Christlikeness.

Humility shows a willingness to serve rather than be served, like Jesus (Mk. 10:45). "In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness." (Phil. 2:5-8)

reliance on God.

It takes humility to admit that we aren't the ones who bring the growth (1 Cor. 3:7-11). As Jesus said, "Apart from me you can do nothing." (Jn. 15:5). Without God's power at work in and through us, we won't bear fruit.
