In casting a vision and goals for our churches and ministries, we need to be on page with God. We do that by living up to our God-given roles as leaders.
Our leadership roles affect how we go about discerning where God wants to take us but also how we cast that vision and set goals to get there.
Leadership Roles and Their Effects on Vision and Goals
Below you’ll find some brief thoughts about how our roles as leaders affect setting and casting a vision and goals to get there.
If others don’t see leadership pressing on to where God may want to take us, how can we expect them to do so? Rather as we “press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of” us, we can then say, “Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do” (Phil. 3:12-17).
Notice that we “press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of” (Phil. 3:12). Casting a vision is about steering people toward God’s desires, not toward our own thoughts.
It takes humility to admit that we aren’t the only ones who can discern God’s vision for our church or ministry. We can then ask people to not only follow our example but also say, “keep your eyes on those who live as we do” (Phil. 3:17).
In taking people to greener pastures, as in pressing on and pursuing what more God has for us, we must remember that that we’re accountable to the Chief Shepherd (1 Pet. 5:1-4).
Our accountability as leaders goes beyond day-to-day maintenance of church life. As seen in the parable of the talents (Matt. 25:14-30), to hear “Well done, good and faithful servant!”, we need to invest what we have in ways that expand where we currently are.
