Does your church seem to be stuck? Maybe you’re floundering around going from one crisis to another, and getting nowhere. Perhaps you’re seeing a decline. Keep praying about it but also turn to Scripture. Make sure your vision and goals are rooted in and aligned with God’s Word. There’s power in the Word to accomplish God’s purposes (Isa. 55:10-11).
How God’s Word Helps Us with Vision and Goals
Scripture is our Guidebook.
When we root our vision and goals in God’s Word, and we align with what He says, we can move on with confidence knowing that He will accomplish His purposes through us (Isa. 55:11). With the psalmist, let’s acknowledge to God, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” (Ps. 119:105)
The Bible is our Sword.
Sometimes we’re under spiritual attack because Satan doesn’t want God’s work to advance. God has already provided us with both an offensive and defensive tool for overcoming and moving into a new phase of church life — the “sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Eph. 6:17). With it we can cut through the lies of Satan, who pushes us to give up, telling us it’s impossible to figure it out or continue on. Satan may also throw distraction after distraction in our way, trying to get our priorities askew, much like he did when tempting Jesus (Matt. 4:1-11). Just as Jesus used Scripture in times of temptation, so must we. The Word points us to the Truth on which to stand firm.
God’s Word is our Re-Alignment Tool.
God uses His Word to cut to the core of the matter, showing us if we’re part of the problem. It enables us to see where we might not be aligned with God. “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” (Heb. 4:12)
The Lord then uses Scripture “for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” so we can “thoroughly equipped” to do God’s will (2 Tim. 3:16-17). This won’t happen, however, if we don’t purposefully turn to and seek to root our vision and goals in His Word.
