No matter what we’re doing, we should do it in the name of the Lord (Ps. 124:8), for His name’s sake (Ps. 109:21), and to the glory of His name (Ps. 115:1). That includes the entire assessment process. That’s what distinguishes the Church from the world’s business practices. We’re not doing it with the hope it will make us, our name, look good. Rather, we’re making assessments to ensure we’re truly aligning with God’s purposes, design, and mission. And, we’re checking that we’re demonstrating Christ-like character and relying on His power.
Why We Should be Concerned with His Name in the Assessment Process
Let Scripture speak for itself.
- Our help is in the name of the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. (Ps. 124:8)
How foolish to even try to do any part of the assessment process in our own strength and understanding. God, in His power and wisdom, was able to create the heaven and earth in all its complexity and varied components so it all fit together and worked. And, He stepped back each day of creation to assess what He’d done. When it comes to the Church, let’s remember it’s His Church. We need His help. Let’s not even attempt to do this on our own.
- Help us, God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name’s sake. (Ps. 79:9)
Be honest. Accurate assessments don’t reveal a perfect church. We too often fall short of the glory of God. Yet, He continues to be patient with us, extending forgiveness and grace. When we fall back on His name, we find the deliverance we need to make changes to get us back on course. And, the glory can only go to His name!
- In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. (Ps. 33:21)
Church leaders sometimes don’t like to do assessments because of what they can stir up. The process itself can get a bit stressful at times. Even the anticipation of dealing with the results can boil up anxiety within us. When we “trust in His holy name”, however, we can find joy in our hearts even doing assessments because He won’t steer us wrong. His name is holy — a perfect, always right standard. We know that as we trust in His name, we’ll find ourselves getting more and more on page with Him.
