The Gospel isn’t something we merely preach or proclaim. While we do find many Bible references of heralding the Good News, we also find many verses about living in accordance with the Gospel. It only makes sense, then, that we ask questions about our alignment with the Gospel in the assessment process.
Questions to Ask in the Assessment Process to Gauge Our Alignment with the Gospel
Note: For each of the following questions indicated by a bullet, rather than expecting a simple yes or no response, answer on a scale of 1 to 10, to provide a more accurate picture.
The starting point must be to look at the standard against which we’re measuring ourselves. If we don’t adhere to the right standard, this assessment may prove meaningless.
- Are we staying true to the Gospel message, not diluting, perverting, or deserting it (2 Cor. 11:4; Gal. 1:6-11) but rather preserving this Truth by not moving from it (Gal. 2:5; Col. 1:23)?

Scripture takes us beyond how we’re administering our duties and beyond numerical statistics to how we’re living — how we’re acting, reacting, and interacting. God expects us to conduct ourselves in a manner worthy of the Gospel (Phil. 1:27). That means we’re using the Gospel as our standard, that to which we conform (1 Tim. 1:11) and then acting in line with it (Gal. 2:14). When we do, we see results in keeping with this glorious Gospel.
Actions & Reactions:
- Are we doing what we do for the sake of the Gospel? (1 Cor. 9:23)
- Are we careful and conscientious about doing that which advances the Gospel rather than hinder it? (1 Cor. 9:12)
Interactions:
- Are we striving together as one for the faith of the Gospel? (Phil. 1:27)
Results:
- Are we advancing the Gospel through our actions, reactions, and interactions? (Phil. 1:12)
- Are we growing in faith and love as a result of the hope of the Gospel? (Col. 1:5)
- Are we bearing fruit? (Col. 1:6)
- Are we exhibiting power, the Holy Spirit, and deep conviction as is fitting for alignment with the Gospel? (1 Thess. 1:5)
The Next Step to Aligning with the Gospel
Take each question to the next step by asking the following question. If you can’t answer this question about any of the above questions, maybe you need to re-ask those questions.
- What evidence can we present for the answer given?
Keep in mind that we do assessments for a purpose, to determine necessary changes to come more into alignment. We then need to ask:
- What can we do to come more into alignment with the Gospel in the way suggested in the questions?
