Most leaders know 2 Timothy 3:16-17 about how Scripture thoroughly equips us. — “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” — But, how many of us apply that to tasks like scheduling people, equipment, and rooms for ministry?
Questions About Scripture Thoroughly Equipping Us for Scheduling
2 Timothy 3:16-17 shows how God uses Scripture “so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work”. Let’s break down this phrase by asking ourselves some key questions and see how our answers relate to scheduling.
Question: Do we view ourselves as servants of God?
As servants of God, we’re accountable to Him for all we do, even scheduling. We don’t do what we do for ourselves but for Him. Leaders sometimes, however, fail to see scheduling as ministry but rather a necessary administrative task. This, then, could speak to our focus when scheduling. If it’s all about the Lord, why do we compartmentalize ministry?
Question: Do we truly believe the Word thoroughly equips us?
We may not find much in Scripture that specifically addresses scheduling but it does provide precepts, principles, and precedence about our responses to issues that could arise while accomplishing this ministry task. This, then, could speak to the source we turn to for help with it. If God thoroughly equips us through His Word, why don’t we use His Word to teach us the right responses, rebuke and correct us when we react in ungodly ways, and train us to do better?
Question: Do we consider scheduling to be a good work?
Since God’s Word teaches that everybody has a part in the Body (Eph. 4:16), then whatever we do to help people do their part must be a good work. This, then, could speak to our motivation and attitudes in scheduling. If we’re doing something good, why do we complain about the sometimes trying nature of scheduling?
If, in our heart of hearts, we can’t respond positively to each of the above questions, we will likely find ourselves frustrated and possibly at our wits end over scheduling issues. People may disappoint us by last minute cancellations but it doesn’t have to send us into a tailspin if we keep our focus on the Lord. When things get rocky and the path forward is anything but smooth, God’s Word is “a lamp for my feet, a light on my path” (Ps. 119:105). We can rise above knowing God will work all things for the good (Rom. 8:28).
