Certainly our goal in church safety should be to prevent problems from occurring. And, as noted in a previous post, we have the power of God’s grace to make safe people. Yet, as long as we’re on this side of eternity, not everyone will grab hold of His grace. Consequently, we will face potential dangers and harmful situations in our churches. How will we cope? — Through the power of His grace!
Power of Grace for Coping When Feeling Vulnerable
Grace helps us cope when feeling vulnerable by strengthening us in our inner being. In the face of danger and threats of various kinds, we might tend to feel rather helpless and afraid. While we might not be able to control our outward circumstances, we can find peace and strength in our inner being to cope with whatever we face when we rely on God’s grace to see us through. Reflect on how the following verses might apply to times you feel most vulnerable.
My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. (2 Cor. 12:9)
And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed; (2 Cor. 9:8)
Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. (Heb. 4:16)
Because we live in a sinful world, even though we might be faithfully walking with the Lord, we will still sometimes be negatively impacted by the evil around us. Yet, we have the promise that the “God of all grace … after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast” (1 Pet. 5:10). He will use these adverse circumstances for our good, making us better and stronger (Rom. 8:28; James 1:2-4). Hence, the power of God’s grace for coping not only leads to inner peace but also the perspective we desperately need.
