Our roles as church leaders determine our responsibility in keeping the Body safe. It isn’t a task we merely pass on to a church security team and then take a hands-off approach. Neither should we be so hands-on that we’re overbearing and obsessive. Within our God-given roles we’ll take a more hands-toward God approach which will bring the right balance.
How Leaders Handle Church Safety Based on their God-Given Roles
We find biblical support for leaders to assume the following leadership roles which dictate their responsibilities in different areas of church life, including safety.
As examples, leaders not only model what to do in terms of church safety but also the heart behind it, following the example of Christ. (1 Pet. 5:2-3)
Leaders, as guides, equip and facilitate rather than control and take over the process. (Eph. 4:11-16)
As servants, leaders come alongside to assist the church security team and others, as needed, not as one who knows it all or does it all, but who genuinely cares. (Gal. 5:13)
Leaders who take their role as a shepherd seriously stay vigilante, knowing that danger can come from within as well as from outside. (Acts 20:28-31a)
As stewards, leaders take a comprehensive view of church safety knowing that they’ve been entrusted with more than the physical safety of the flock. (Jn. 17:10-11)
In time we will take a closer look at each of these roles in regard to church safety.
