Church Safety as a Ministry Using Spiritual Gifts?

We’ve already laid the case for church safety simply because love protects (1 Cor. 13:7). Elsewhere we’re exhorted to “serve one another humbly in love” (Gal. 5:13). When we protect, we serve one another in love. To enable us to effectively serve, God gave us spiritual gifts. Hence, we can, and should, view church safety as a ministry using spiritual gifts. The question then becomes which spiritual gifts best suit this type of ministry.

Spiritual Gifts Used in Church Safety Ministry

Following are some of the basic positions and tasks involved in a church safety.

Security Director to Oversee This Ministry

Assistant to the Security Director

Security Team Members

Trainer of Security Team and Others in Positions Responsible for Safety in Their Sphere on Ministry

Developing Safety Policies

If we seek to staff these positions with people spiritually gifted to serve in those ways, we should see church safety move from a mere function to ministry.

The Ministry Handbook: Spiritual Gifts in Use Handbook suggests spiritual gifts that might best fit the different tasks and responsibilities involved in church safety. The handbook looks at gifting for 26 other kinds of tasks for which a leader might be responsible to either do or oversee. In addition, it considers gifts best suited for 16 broad ministry areas.
