Biblical Support for Job Descriptions?

Share:

Scripture Useful for Even Job DescriptionsWe know the power of God’s Word for “teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” so we “may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Tim. 3:16-17). That suggests all we do, even the use of job descriptions, should align with Scripture. Here’s the problem: The Bible doesn’t mention job descriptions. Maybe that’s a more worldly term, so what about “ministry descriptions”? Again, the answer would be no. That term isn’t used in Scripture either.

Does God’s Word Support Job Descriptions?

We may not find terminology used in Bible for job or ministry descriptions, but we do find precedence for sharing expectations, qualities needed, and requirements. Here are some examples:

  • lists of qualifications i.e., deacons, overseers (1 Tim. 3:1-13; Titus 1:5-9)
  • description for elders (1 Pet. 5:1-3)
  • list of spiritual gifts equippers should have (Eph. 4:11-12)
  • distinction in responsibilities of who would take care of the widows and what the apostles should do (Acts 6:1-5)
  • entrustment given to “reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others” (2 Tim. 2:2)

In a sense, God’s Word fulfills the role of a job description. It’s just not consolidated in one place on a few pieces of paper.

Benefit of Job or Ministry Descriptions Comes Through Biblical Alignment

If we want job descriptions to be “teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” tools that equip (2 Tim. 3:16-17), then they must reflect biblical values like God’s purposes, design, and mission for the Church. They must point to the need for Christ-like character and pulling on God’s power to accomplish responsibilities.

As in anything we do, the use of job or ministry descriptions should align with Scripture. What are the qualifications and spiritual gifts for different ministries God’s Word suggests? What are responsibilities for the various ministries that align with what Scripture emphasizes for teachers, leaders, worship teams, people helpers, etc.?

When biblically aligned, job descriptions have potential for being used by God to promote effective ministry.
