As leaders we constantly make decisions about what to say or do. While we might not consciously think about it this way, we are choosing to say or do that which will either be self-promoting or glorifying the Lord. We will be deciding what to say or do based on human wisdom or that which comes from Him. We will be determining our course of action or our words for their short term consequences or for eternal good. Obviously decisions worthy of bearing the name of the Lord Jesus are those that glorify the Lord, pull on His wisdom, and have eternal consequences.
And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. (Col. 3:17)
What Decisions Worthy of Bearing His Name, the Name of the Lord Jesus, Look Like
We can look at the verses leading up to Colossians 3:17 for how to describe decisions about what we say and do in the name of the Lord Jesus.
- They will be decisions determined from our position in Christ under His authority with an eternal perspective not short-sighted and self-determined.
“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. …” (Col. 3:1-10)
- They will be decisions that put Him first but also reflect Him through and through not ones that conform to the world or reflect our own biases.
“Christ is all, and is in all” (Col. 3:11)
- They will be decisions born out of love and reflecting the kind of love with which He loves us not self-centered or self-serving.
“over all these virtues put on love” (Col. 3:12-14)
- They will be decisions about which we will experience an inner peace and that will steer the Church toward peace not stress, anxiety, and turmoil.
“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace.” (Col. 3:15)
- They will be decisions based on His teaching not human wisdom.
“Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly” (Col. 3:16)
- They will be decisions for which we will thank and glorify the Father not regret.
“giving thanks to God the Father through him” (Col. 3:17)
These are the kind of decisions worthy of bearing His name that lead to powerful results.
