We know that “it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God not by works, so that no one can boast” (Eph. 2:8-9). But, how often do we think of the power and influence of grace in ministry or in all we do as leaders? Even delegation should be influenced by grace.
Ways Delegation is Influenced by Grace
When we think about the power of grace, we can make some correlations of how it affects leadership tasks such as delegation.
- Since God has gifted, or empowered, believers to serve in accordance with His grace (Rom. 12:6; Eph. 4:7), it only makes sense that where possible we seek to delegate to those best suited to the task based on their spiritual gifts.
Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. (1 Pet. 4:10)
- We will be less likely to micromanage those to whom we have delegated responsibility when we give that person over to the grace of God. We not only commend people to the grace of God (Acts 13:43; 14:26; 15:40) but also make it clear that God at work in and through them is what really matters, not their self-effort (1 Cor. 15:10).
Now I commit you to God and to the word of his grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified. (Acts 20:32)
… be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others. (2 Tim. 2:1-2)
- We must guard against expecting perfection in those to whom we delegate but rather encourage reliance on God’s grace. More than a self-improvement plan, God’s grace can help them in their weaknesses (2 Cor. 12:9) and give them the power to rise above temptations (Titus 2:11-12). When people’s hearts are strengthened by grace, as opposed to worldly wisdom and self-effort, they will tend to keep perspective in focusing on what really matters (Heb. 13:9) and relate well with others (2 Cor. 1:12).
But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen. (2 Pet. 3:18)
But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them – yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me (1 Cor. 15:10)
- We can depend on God’s grace to see us through any issues that might arise in the process of delegating. We can go to the throne of grace for help (Heb. 4:16).
But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. (James 4:6-8)
With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may bring to fruition your every desire for goodness and your every deed prompted by faith. We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ. (2 Thess. 1:11-12)
