Church and ministry leaders must juggle many responsibilities. To be good stewards, we need to learn to delegate some of those responsibilities to people qualified to help, or who can be trained.
Good Stewards See Delegation as a Means of Multiplication
Part of being a good steward of responsibilities God’s given us is aligning with His intent for the Church. The Church is His so it only makes sense we follow His design. Since the Body “grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work”, we need to make opportunities for people to get involved using their God-given gifts. Part of that comes through delegation.
Disciple-making involves the concept of multiplication as we entrust responsibilities to reliable people who in turn will learn to invest in others (2 Tim. 2:2). Think of the parable of the talents (Matt. 25:14-30). The master gave varying amounts to each of his servants, expecting them to faithfully steward his resources. Only those who multiplied what they’d been given heard, “Well done, good and faithful servant!” When we get others involved through delegation, we have opportunity to invest into their lives as they come along side of us.
When We Delegate, We Maximize our Time and Resources
When we try to do everything ourselves, we risk becoming less efficient. We only have so much time and energy. To accomplish everything, we may find ourselves cutting corners, always falling behind schedule, or wearing ourselves down trying to the point of exhaustion. When we’re exhausted, it’s hard to give it our all.
If we delegate what we can, we have the potential of becoming more efficient. We maximize our time and energy. We accomplish everything, with the help of others, with quality, timeliness, and energy to give it our all.
It isn’t difficult to determine which of these scenarios has the most potential of multiplication. Will we hear, “Well done, good and faithful servant!”?
