We have a purposeful God who has recorded details in His Word for a reason. We even have records and reports from the resurrection that reaffirm His power and the sufficiency of His plan for our salvation.
What Records and Reports from the Resurrection Teach Us
First we find in Scripture “that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day” (1 Cor. 15:4).
Being sealed in a tomb with His body wrapped for that long, clearly points to the power of God to raise Jesus from the dead — — a miracle only God could accomplish.
Then we read reports of who first discovered the empty tomb and who they told, etc. (Matt. 28:1-10; Mk. 16:1-11).
The order of who knew when apparently was important or it wouldn’t have been recorded in such detail. Why the women and not the twelve disciples? Perhaps in a male-driven culture Jesus wanted people to know from the start that “in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith … There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Gal. 3:26-28)
And, we also find specific record of how many people the resurrected Christ appeared to before ascending back to heaven. After appearing to Cephas and then the twelve disciples, “he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at the same time”, to James and all the apostles, and then after His ascension to Saul who became the Apostle Paul (1 Cor. 15:5-8).
So many eye witnesses provide a lot of evidence that Jesus did truly rise from the dead. Even doubters, like Thomas, were able to see and touch the scars in Jesus hands and side (Jn. 20:27).
The records and reports from the resurrection lend support, or credibility, to God’s work, letting us know that all things are possible with Him, no matter how long we’ve been in “the tomb”. They point to the faithfulness of God who wants to remove our doubts and help us believe that the same power that raised Jesus from the dead is available to us today (Eph. 1:18-20). With the evidence before us, it becomes clear who get the credit for whatever good is happening in our midst.
