For organization to lead to life-giving effects, it must point people to the Head who is “the resurrection and the life” (Jn. 11:25). — “He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.” (Col. 1:17-18)
Effects of Life-Giving Organizational Efforts
When all we do is “from him and through him and for him” (Rom. 11:36), our organization leads to the following:
- People are blessed as their needs are met and are better because of our organizational efforts. (Examples: Acts 6:1-7, 2 Cor. 9:1-15)
- People are empowered knowing that the same power that raised Jesus from the dead is available to them. (Eph. 1:18-20)
- People glorify God because without Him, none of this would be possible for apart from Christ, we can do nothing. (Jn. 15:5)
If Organization Isn’t Leading to These Effects
If your organizational efforts can’t be described as written above, they won’t lead to these effects. There’s still hope. In Christ, we’ve already died and been raised with Him (Col. 3:1-3). We just aren’t living that way. We may be trying to function with our grave clothes still on.
- What policies, programs, or structures are we holding on to that merely expend time and resources with little or no spiritual fruit? Let it go!
- What clutter, red tape, or rigid procedures are keeping us from moving forward? Let it go!
- What personal needs or political agendas drive a need to maintain control through how we organize? Let it go!
As Jesus told the bystanders after raising Lazarus from the dead, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.” (Jn. 11:38-44) — Let’s release ourselves and people to be the Body God created us to be, one in which true ministry can happen because of the One who is “the resurrection and the life” (Jn. 11:25). We put to death, rid ourselves of, and take off (Col. 3:5-9) that which keeps us from experiencing the full life He came to give us (Jn. 10:10)). We put on the new (Col. 3:10-17), having been raised with Christ (Col. 3:1).
