A Leader’s Spiritual Gifts Can Affect Staff Evaluations

Spiritual Gifts Power for Staff EvaluationsAs in anything we do, staff evaluations should be done in accordance with the basics of life in Christ. If you haven’t already read previous posts, you’ll find them here: Staff Evaluations Category  — How good to know that we can pull on God’s power to do whatever we have to do, with spiritual gifts being one of His means to empower us. Yet, not all spiritual gifts are best suited for every task for which a leader is responsible.

We previously looked at spiritual gifts most appropriate for doing the various phases of staff evaluations. Not all leaders, however, have those gifts. While not having the most appropriate gifts for doing staff evaluations can make it more challenging for those leaders, being aware of how the gifts they do have could affect the evaluations should be helpful.

How Typical Leadership Gifts Can Affect Staff Evaluations

As already noted in a previous posts, leaders with the spiritual gift of pastor should do quite well with staff evaluations, particularly in the one-on-one consultation phase. However, not all leaders have the gift of pastor. Those with the gifts of leadership or administration may find aligning with the basics harder.

Leaders with the spiritual gifts of leadership or faith might find it harder to be patient with those who seem to be lagging behind or haven’t yet caught the vision.

Leaders with the gift of administration might find it harder to look at the big picture, having more of a tendency to zero in on specific details of the ministry.

How Other Spiritual Gifts Can Affect Balance Needed in Staff Evaluations

Leaders with prophecy or mercy in their gift mix may find it harder to keep the Christ-like balance of grace and truth when doing staff evaluations.

Those with the spiritual gift of prophecy might find it harder to extend grace in dealing with issues, being more prone to zeroing in on what’s wrong.

Those with the spiritual gift of mercy might find it harder to deal with the problems, wanting to gloss over the issues and give people the benefit of the doubt.

Rather than use gifting as an excuse for not doing staff evaluations or for not doing them well, remember that spiritual gifts are just one of the means God uses to empower us. We’re really without excuse. Take some time to review other ways to appropriate His power: God’s Power for the Church

Also, as we’ll see in the next post, we do have some alternative approaches to compensate for not having the most appropriate spiritual gifts for doing staff evaluations.
