We serve God so it only makes sense that we encourage both paid and volunteer staff to do ministry God’s way. Since Scripture teaches us all we need to know about God and His ways, use the Word as the measuring tool, not some man-made standard. Tailored staff evaluations can help you do that.
What to Include in Staff Evaluation to Discern If People are Doing Ministry God’s Way
God’s Word defines each of the following aspects of ministry. We can therefore help people understand that they are first and foremost accountable to God for how they do ministry. (Click on the link for more about each of these elements.)
- Define: We align what we do in ministry with God. He is the Standard. (Rom. 12:1-2)
- Ask: In what areas might you struggle to align with God’s character and ways, perhaps more in conformity with the world than with God?
- Define: God cares about both process and results. (Col. 1:10)
- Ask: What evidence do you see of God at work in and through you? … in the lives of people you serve? … in the ministry process itself?
- Define: We serve through God’s wisdom, grace, and power, not in our own strength, understanding, and determination. (Eph. 3:20-21; 2 Pet. 1:3)
- Ask: In what ways do you pull on God’s power in your ministry? In what areas do you struggle to pull on His power?
- Define: Attention goes to God and what He does, not to ourselves or ministry programs. (Rom. 11:36; Gal. 6:14)
- Ask: How obvious is it that your ministry is all about God?
- Define: While seeking to use effective methods, we put our trust in God to work through us, not in our programs and strategies. (Prov. 3:5-7; 16:3)
- Ask: How do you go about choosing methods and how willing are you to adapt as needed?
- Define: We aim at what matters most to God which is to love Him with all of our being that spills over into loving others. (Matt. 22:37-40; 1 Cor. 13:1-3)
- Ask: How would someone looking in assess what’s most important in your ministry?
- Define: It takes God’s strength and sustenance for us to thrive and not just survive in serving. (2 Cor. 12:9-10; Phil. 4:12-13)
- Ask: What are some of the biggest challenges you face in ministry? How have they affected you?
- Define: God looks for the heart of a servant, filled with integrity and love. (Phil. 2:5-7; 2 Cor. 1:12)
- Ask: How would you describe yourself? How do you think the people you serve would describe you? How would God describe you?
- Define: God designed the Church to function as a team, interdependently, with everybody doing their part. (1 Cor. 12:20-27; Eph. 4:16)
- Ask: How well do you interact and work with fellow staff?
Take the assessment of each of these elements to the next level. Work on action steps to align more with God and His ways as defined by His Word.
Follow-up Resource in Light of the Evaluation

Get a better understanding of each of the above elements in the Ministry God’s Way Discipleship Tool. In addition to input, the resource also includes a Bible study for each element.
If a staff member struggles with an area, you could use this tool as a follow-up step. The resource is reproducible for your sphere of ministry so you could provide them with a copy in its entirety or just the element(s) most needed as discerned from the evaluation.
