We’re exhorted “pray in the Spirit on ALL occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests” (Eph. 6:18). Obviously staff evaluations would be no exception. We can, however, get even more specific about why prayer is needed when doing staff evaluations.
4 Reasons Prayer is Needed When Doing Staff Evaluations
1) Staff evaluations can be anxiety producing events. Just the anticipation of it can put a person on the edge.
The evaluator may be anxious if needing to deal with a negative issue. The person being evaluated might dread the unknown. Going into the meeting already anxious can set the stage for defensive responses. Prayer therefore becomes critical since it leads to His peace which guards our hearts and minds. — “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 4:6-7)
2) Satan likes to piggy back on anxiety producing events to bring discouragement, discord, and even division.
God, however, cares about us, no matter what the situation might be, and wants better for us. So, we’re encouraged to cast all our anxiety on Him (1 Pet. 5:7). The next verse lets us know why it is so important to guard this anxiety producing event with prayer. — Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. (1 Pet. 5:8)
3) Sometimes we need to deal with sensitive issues in staff evaluations so we need to know the best way to proceed.
The goal of staff evaluations should be promoting the good of the whole but also for the individual to become more “mature and complete, not lacking anything” (James 1:4). That path forward can seem obscured. We need help from the One who not only sees the big picture but also knows the best way to proceed (Isa. 55:9). — “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” (James 1:5)
4) For the staff evaluation to be instrumental in bringing about change, we need more than a self-improvement plan.
We need to keep coming back to the right Source for the strength and ability to change. We follow God’s provision for healing, not a self-help plan. — “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” (James 5:16)
In light of the above, it seems rather foolish to go into staff evaluations without pulling on the power of prayer, doesn’t it?
