Staff evaluations grow old when always done the same way, asking the same questions each time. Why not change it up by using different criteria, like, for example, the effect of people’s ministry on the name of the Lord.

Scripture makes it clear that we should do everything to, for, and in the name of the Lord (Ps. 115:1; 31:3; Col. 3:17). Shouldn’t we want to make sure our ministry staff are doing that?
Staff evaluations go beyond merely assessing their ministry to setting goals to improve. We should not, however, be making it about a self-improvement plan but rather finding “help is in the name of the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth” (Ps. 124:8). So, why not look at people’s ministries in light of His Name?
Questions to Ask in Staff Evaluations about the Effect of Their Ministry on the Name of the Lord
We might ask staff questions similar those that follow. The first question(s) in each point is more of an assessment question whereas the second is more about setting a goal to improve. As such, the suggested process for using the questions would be to ask the first bullet question(s). Then read the Scripture, followed by the second question.
1) Glory to His Name
Not to us, LORD, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness. (Ps. 115:1)
We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ. (2 Thess. 1:12)
- How do you handle people’s criticism? How do you handle their praise?
- In what ways can you make your response in each scenario more about bringing glory to the name of the Lord?
2) For His Name’s Sake
Since you are my rock and my fortress, for the sake of your name lead and guide me. (Ps. 31:3)
- What’s your biggest concern when things go wrong in ministry?
- How might you handle it differently if you made a more conscientious effort to resolve it for the sake of His name?
3) In the Name of the Lord
And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. (Col. 3:17)
- How conscientious are you about doing all you do in light of who God is and His work in and through you?
- What effects might it have on your ministry if you became more deliberate in it?
4) Call on the Name of the Lord
Then I called on the name of the LORD: “Lord, save me!” (Ps. 116:4)
I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the LORD. (Ps. 116:13)
- Where do you tend turn for support, or help? How quick are you to call on God for help?
- What might happen if turning to God in prayer was more consistently the first place you looked for help?
